Hell Spawn

De naam van deze Griekse band klinkt alleszins heel erg 'true'. En ergens ook een beetje nostalgisch, wat bij nader onderzoek niet zo vreemd is gezien deze jongens al bezig zijn sedert 1998. Het was toen hun ambitie om technische en duistere heavy metal te spelen in de trant van King Diamond, Mercyful Fate. Het heeft tot dit jaar geduurd om dat formeel aan de wereld voor te stellen (een demo uit 2005 even niet meegerekend). Ze zijn zonder meer in hun opzet geslaagd. En hebben dat met een aantal bijkomstige elementen uitgebreid. Hun sound heeft immers ook een doomy en episch karakter meegekregen. Een Candlemass, een Cirith Ungol, een Memory Garden, namen die ter illustratie ook niet zo vreemd zijn. Of een Veni Domine, omdat Heathendom toch ook een hoge vorm van complexiteit in hun nummer stopt. Enige en tegelijk grootste verschil is de zang van Dimitris Koutsouvelis die nogal apart is (zoek eerder in de richting van eerstgenoemde bands, min de extreme kopstem weliswaar). "Nescience" is allerminst voorgekauwde kost, maar het smaakt wel naar meer! Check it out.

The name of this Greek band definitely sounds 'true'. And in a way somewhat nostalgic as well, what after some further research doesn't seem strange, because these guys are around since 1998. It was then their ambition to play technical and dark heavy metal in the style similar to King Diamond, Mercyful Fate. It lasted until this year to introduce it formally to the world (not counting a demo from 2005). Without doubt, they've succeeded. And elaborated their aim with a few other elements. Their sound also has a doomy and epic character to it. Names like Candlemass, Cirith Ungol, Memory Garden are not so wrong to illustrate that statement. Or maybe even Veni Domine, because Heathendom also has a high dose of complexity in their songs. The main, and at the same time biggest, difference are the vocals of Dimitris Koutsouvelis, who has a rather distinct voice (think of something like the first bands mentioned, minus the extreme falsetto though). "Nescience" is absolutely no mainstream album, it offers so much more! Check it out.
