Het folk metal genre leek in eerste instantie vooral een Noord-Europees gebeuren, maar nu is het zelfs al doorgedrongen tot exotischer contreien als Brazilië. Getuige daarvan deze Lothlöryen die met het wat belabberd getitelde "Some ways back no more" al aan hun tweede full cd toe zijn (ze brachten in 2005 "Of bards and madmen" uit). Hun inspiratie voor deze nieuwe plaat haalden ze bij Tolkien, de zoveelste in rij alweer. Ze durven wel eens een loopje met het verhaal te nemen, in "Hobbit's song" beweert het vijftal bijvoorbeeld dat die Halflingen eigenlijk van rock-'n-roll houden. Er wordt vooral gebruik gemaakt van de geijkte metalinstrumenten (gitaren, bas, drums), de uitheemse instrumenten komen slechts sporadisch voorbij. Dit drukt een grote Blind Guardian stempel (nog zo'n Tolkien fans) op de muzikale richting, maar een Falconer of bij momenten Elvenking kunnen ook een indicatie zijn. Lothlöryens muziek is niet grensverleggend of super origineel maar zit wel goed in elkaar en is degelijk uitgevoerd. Grootste troef daarbij zijn de uitstekende zangpartijen, zowel de leadvocalen van Leo Oliveira als het koorwerk! Toch maar even langs http://www.myspace.com/lothloryenband als je een folky bent.

In the first place seemed the folk metal genre mostly a Nothern European thing, but now it even reached the more exotic regions such as Brazil. Proof is here with Lothlöryen, who releases their second full album, oddly titled "Some ways back no more" (they made their debut in 2005 with "Of bards and madmen"). They get their inspiration in Tolkien, like so many before them. But they give the story a congenial twist, in "Hobbit's song" we learn that the Halflings actually love rock 'n' roll. The band uses the standard metal instruments (being guitars, bass and drums), the less common instruments come by only occasionally. This marks the musical direction with a big Blind Guardian stamp (also big Tolkien fans), but Falconer or even Elvenking can also give an indication. Lothlöryen's music isn't pushing boundaries or super original but it has its moments and is very well performed.
