Old school metal geüpdatet naar hedendaagse normen, velen hebben het geprobeerd maar niet iedereen slaagt erin om ofwel de juiste sfeer neer te zetten of om ook maar enigszins gedreven over te komen. Het Pure Steel label slaagt er meestal wel in om het kaf van het koren te scheiden, toch is enige argwaan altijd wel op zijn plaats. Het Canadese trio dat zich Savage Blade noemt, is pas vorig jaar met de band begonnen en dan moet je al verdomd goed zijn om met een straf debuut af te komen. Openingstrack "We are the hammer" is alvast raak. Vette riff, uitstekende zang, sterk refrein: een binnenkomer van jewelste maar misschien een lucky shot? Helemaal niet, want "Night of the blade", "Merlin", "Stallions of the highway" tot en met de gevoelige instrumentale afsluiter "Opus of fire" maken allemaal eenzelfde overweldigende indruk! Mij doet dit qua intensiteit, qua sfeer en aanstekelijkheid een beetje denken aan het debuut van het Australische Pegazus ("Wings of destiny" uit 1998), maar gemiddeld herkent u ook wel Saxon (een titel als "The eagle has stranded" alleen al), Diamond Head, Manowar, The Rods... Savage Blade nestelt zich mooi tussen Enforcer, Cauldron, White Wizzard of zelfs 3 Inches Of Blood als vaandeldragers van The New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal. "We are the hammer" is niet meer of niet minder dan een pure klasseplaat!

Old school metal updated to the modern standard: many have tried, little have succeeded. Or they didn't come up with the right atmosphere or they missed the genuine passion. The Pure Steel label generally knows how to separate the boys from the men, though some slight form of suspicion is never out of place. The Canadian threesome that calls themselves Savage Blade has only started out last year, which implies that they have to be very good to impress people with a debut album. Opening song "We are the hammer", in fact, is bulls eye! Great riff, excellent vocals, kick ass refrain: incoming power, but maybe a lucky shot? No freaking way, because "Night of the blade", "Merlin", "Stallions of the highway" straight until the sensitive instrumental "Opus of fire" give the same overwhelming impression! It reminds me, in intensity, vibe and catchiness a bit of the debut of the Australian Pegazus ("Wings of destiny" from 1998), but commonly influences from Saxon (a title like "The eagle has stranded" says it all), Diamond Head, Manowar, The Rods, ... Savage Blade nicely puts themselves between Enforcer, Cauldron, White Wizzard and even 3 Inches Of Blood as the ambassadors of The New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal. "We are the hammer" is nothing less than pure class!Related Items
